Olympic Torch Relay – The journey so far…
We were so excited that the Olympic Torch was set to visit every location where we have a restaurant, we decided to follow it’s journey! Here’s how the journey has gone so far…
Glasgow – 8th & 9th June
The first stop for the Torch Relay was Glasgow – a great start to get us in the mood for the Olympics. We joined thousands of people in George’s Square on Friday evening & there was a real ‘party in the park’ vibe with live music playing & excitement in the air.
The next morning, the sunshine was out as the torch left the Clyde at The Tall Ship & Riverside Museum, heading for Clydebank & Dumbarton. There were plenty of families crowded around to get a glimpse of the torch.
Aberdeen – 11th & 12th June
After Glasgow, we were brimming full of excitement for the Aberdeen Relay. This promised to be a special event as local girl, Emeli Sande, was set to headline & she certainly didn’t disappoint!
The next morning, we watched the torch set off from Dyce & prepared to meet it again in the next stop of Edinburgh!
Edinburgh – 13th & 14th June
Upon arriving in the Scottish capital, we were greeted by a glorious patch of sunshine which en-captured the mood & excitement surrounding the Olympic Torch Relay. The city was buzzing & it was clear to see that spirit of the sporting event had reached Edinburgh. The evening saw a procession around the city which saw the Olympic flame head into Edinburgh Castle.
The next morning, we joined the crowds to watch the torch set off from Festival Square onto it’s next destination of Alnwick Castle.
Newcastle – 15th & 16th June
In contrast to sunny Edinburgh, when crossing the border we hit a relentless rain cloud. As hard as Mother Nature tried, she failed to dampen our spirits & in reward we were treated to a spectacle which lit up a gloomy day. Infamous survival expert, Bear Grylls, stole the show, as he zip-wired from the heights of the Tyne Bridge, bearing the flaming torch…
The next day, we saw the Olympic Torch being abseiled down the side of the Sage building – definitely an exciting finish to our time in Newcastle & Gateshead!
Hull – 18th & 19th June
The sunshine made a welcome return as we reached Hull. The evening event saw the torch arrive into West Park & there was a great atmosphere, with an eruption of cheers as the torch made it’s way along the crowds who were lined up to watch the relay.
The next day, we saw the Torch leave The Deep & make it’s way through Hull city centre continuing with the amazing journey across Great Britain!
