Recognising Your Body is Telling You it Needs Watering

Your body needs to be constantly watered and looked after just like your plants at home.

But while many of us aren’t great at looking after our house plants, we tend to be much better at keeping on top of our own water levels.

However, the signs your body will send you should it start to get dehydrated are sometimes attributed to other things unknowingly, so it is still important to know where you stand.

Generally there are four signs of dehydration. These are feeling lightheaded, headaches, a general lack of energy and a sense of lethargy, and dark-coloured urine. So if you’ve noticed a combination of these, and maybe keep having hunger pangs urging you to pick up a snack, it could well be your body telling you need to drink more, not gobble up a snack.

How much should you drink to avoid such symptoms, then? Well, the European Food Safety Authority says most women should drink about 1.6 litres and men around 2.0 litres of fluid per day.

This means that whilst the age-old adage of drinking eight glasses of water is in some instances ok, it would have to be 200ml glasses in order to be correct for a woman, and 10 glasses for a man. There are other factors to consider as well however, such as other health considerations, weight and height, so this is more a guideline than a definite.

Even the temperature can have an effect on the levels of water you should consume, not to mention that if you are more of an active person, you should also factor that into your daily water consumption too.

Is That a Fact? Water Facts You Might Not Know

Water is all around us, it’s pretty unavoidable with such a huge percentage of the Earth’s surface covered in water! But many of us don’t fully appreciate the importance of water.

For example, most of us know the Earth is predominantly covered water, but many of us fail to realise that as humans, we actually share almost the same composition as the Earth’s surface, as we are 70% water. That’s because our skin, organs, and pretty much everything else is made of a high level of water – when you know this, the need to stay properly hydrated makes a lot more sense!

Drinking plenty of water is very important, but you can overdo it. Drinking too much water can cause what is known as water intoxication, which although far less common than dehydration, can have similarly fatal effects.

Hot water freezes more quickly than cold water. A bizarre phenomenon that scientists have only recently got to grips with!

While a normal human can live up to a month without food, they can only really live a week without water. Obviously this is dependent on the person, but it reflects the true importance of keeping hydrated.

On a similar theme, drinking eight cups of water a day is a bit of an old wives tale. While it is a rough guide, the true amount of water a person should consume each day is dependent on the job they do, their health, their age, even their size and weight. Therefore it is always recommended you do a bit more research into this before deciding what is best for you.

Water can help keep the skin young, helps filter your kidneys, and it even helps regulate your body temperature, which is why it is always recommended to drink plenty of water if you catch a fever.

Give yourself a natural glow with nothing more than H2O

Now whilst I must admit we have picked the title as it had a nice ring to it, it does have a lot of truth – we’re not talking snake oil here as we all know how important water is to our general wellbeing!

Water is actually a very good way to give yourself a good skin complexion. There is no flashy marketing involved or glamorous models (who we all know have plenty of money to spend on expensive treatments whenever they feel), water is just water. Plain old H2O. No gimmicks involved, just the science behind how your body works.

Our bodies, as you will more than likely know, are predominantly made from water. This figure stands at around 60 odd percent, so yes we’re made in no small measure from water. The human skin is made up of an even higher level of water actually, so keeping it well hydrated is essential.

The moisturisers you buy in store typically make the most of this natural water in our skin, keeping the water from the upper layers of our skin. These obviously do a job of giving your face and skin vitamins and minerals to keep them glowing, but actually if you try drinking enough water each day, you might find your skin begins to have a natural glow anyway. So over time you may be able to save yourself a few pounds too!

Keep on top of your water consumption, especially in winter when your skin naturally gets dryer because of the harsher climate, and also boost this further with plenty of good healthy products such as fruit, vegetables and a little less of the bad stuff, coffee, alcohol and the like, which can actually make you become dehydrated – counteracting your new water based skin adventure!

If you keep a constant supply of water nearby throughout the day, you’ll be able to combat the cold weather and constant in and out between warm offices and brisk breezes outside, with a glow upon your face!

A Soup-Er Way To Keep Hydrated This Winter

Winter, a time for scarves, woolly hats and thick coats. But also a time when keeping yourself well hydrated is essential.

“Does that mean I have to drink cold water on these chilly winter days?” I hear you ask. Well, yes and no. Of course, nothing quite beats swigging plenty of glasses of pure H2O, but there are other ways to improve your levels of hydration in the winter months. One such way is soup.

Soup is a great way to combat the, “oh I don’t want to drink water by itself,” complaints you might have in the winter months. One example of a soup you can make yourself is a winter green soup.

All it takes is some spinach, kale, chard, potatoes, onions and carrots – portions will vary on how much you wish to cook –to tick the vegetable box, or alternatively just create a simple vegetable soup with whatever is left in your fridge.

A bit of olive oil, salt and pepper and some vegetable stock, maybe a bit of garlic if you wish and you have the ingredients for a hydrating winter warmer.

Cooking it is as simple as getting the onions potatoes and carrots cooked nice and soft in some stock, before adding your greens and the rest of the stock. You may wish to blend the soup if you want something smooth, but that’s up to you.

Alternatively if vegetables aren’t your thing as a winter lunch treat, try chicken noodle soup, which is another great hydrating food. In fact, most soups are great for hydration as long as you avoid the cream-based soups

When it comes to hot drinks and foods, one thing to try and avoid, or at least try to consume less of during the winter months, is caffeine-based hot drinks. Now I know that might mean sacrificing the occasional skinny latte or cup of tea, but your body will certainly thank you for it – stick to your soups and herbal drinks, or even warm water mixed with lemon and honey.

A Healthy Workforce is a Productive Workforce

Now the winter is well and truly upon us, it is inevitable that someone will come down with the sniffles and, before you know it, half the workforce is achoo’ing, sniffing or walking around like an extra in a zombie flick.

Now while it is no guarantee of success, getting your workforce to increase their water consumption is a good way to try and cut down the spread of the dreaded lurgies over the winter months.

It seems so simple really. But, a few cups of water throughout the day can be a great boon for the health of your workforce.

Whilst many might shudder at the thought of cold water in the winter, there are ways to get around this. First and most simply of all, heat it up! Yes some warm water, perhaps in an herbal or green tea – or even in the form of the age-old recommendation honey and lemon remedy – can be a flavoursome way to consume the water required to keep your body, and your staff, in tip top condition throughout the winter months.

You can also eat your water. This might seem a bit daft, and we’re certainly not suggesting you take a knife and fork to your cup of H20, but you can instead encourage staff to eat some water-rich fruit, especially things such as citrus fruit which is also rich in Vitamin C – another vital way to combat colds over the winter.

This also extends to certain soups and broth-like dishes too. As long as it is a vegetable based soup rather than being predominantly cream based – which can be very calorific.

Ultimately as any boss can attest to, a healthy workforce is a productive workforce and any way in which you can help your team stay fit as a fiddle over the winter is always going to be beneficial for you and your business.

Water is Great for the Immune System

Most know drinking water is a healthy alternative to drinking coffee or cans of fizzy drinks. But did you know water’s health benefits extend beyond things such as hydration and can actually help with the immune system too?

First and foremost, water is a natural way to detox. This is because it helps carry oxygen to all the necessary places.

This is obviously vital in getting your body systems to function effectively. With all your organs and muscles working to their full capacity, your immune system should also function at its best.

In reference to the idea of detox, water allows the kidneys to purify your system from harmful toxins. At the same time it carries vital nutrients to your cells, it also helps them expel any waste products.

Water can also be used as I way of coping with certain ailments. For example it may help with joint problems by helping to keep joints lubricated.

It is also suggested to help combat things such as depression and insomnia. This is because it may help provide the serotonin and melatonin known to be needed to help each ailment.

Water is also a very helpful addition to your digestive system. As mentioned previously, it provides nutrients to your cells. In the case of your digestive system it helps it to properly digest food. Often if you do not consume enough fluids, you may find yourself struggling with constipation, or potentially even more serious digestive issues.

Water also helps in the production of lymph, something essential for the circulation of white blood cells around the body – this is vital to help carry immune cells to various parts of the body in order to fight disease.

What can You Expect from Drinking More Water?

Most of us know that we should be drinking more water, but what exactly are the benefits of doing so?

We take a look at our favourite incentives for visiting the office water coolers regularly.

Our looks

Yes it’s vain, but that morning trip to fill up a jug of water will really improve our appearance.

When you drink more water, whether from a bottle or mains-fed water coolers, your eyes will look brighter, your energy levels will provide your skin with a glow. You’ll also look and feel better.

This is because water supports your body’s natural cleansing and detoxifying processes, and also naturally moisturises the skin.

Forget expensive beauty preparations and creams, basic water will do wonders for your looks!

Our health

If you have ever experienced digestive problems, take a look at your diet.

If you are drinking lots of caffeine and sugary drinks, you will see immediate benefits if you switch to calming chamomile or peppermint blends.

Look for herbal teas that combine a range of natural herbs, and ingredients for stomach-calming benefits.

If you have ever experienced tension headaches or stress, swap your coffee habit for natural fruit teas that help hydrate and release those pains, which are caused by blood vessels constricting through dehydration, telling your nerves to jangle!

And for the sake of your teeth, bones and overall health, green tea is a perfect choice, offering myriad health benefits.

Our well-being overall

Tea or a cold drink can also provide a lovely ritual on a busy day.

Rather than dashing around and drinking expensive commercial drinks on the run, take time to enjoy a glass of delicious filtered water in a beautiful glass, or a well brewed fruit or herbal tea in a beautiful mug.

Enjoy and savour the experience and linger over it for a few minutes to feel calm, relaxed and full of well-being.

Staying Hydrated on the Go

One of the hardest things about staying hydrated is trying to get enough liquid when on the go.

Unless you plan your days carefully, there are often few opportunities to get hold of a drink whilst you are going about your daily business.

As a result, you might end up paying for expensive takeaway drinks. This option is also less than healthy; if you often buy takeaway coffees, flavoured hot drinks, carbonated drinks, beverages purporting to be sports or energy drinks or calorie-rich milkshakes, then you may also find yourself adding on pounds in weight (whilst losing pounds in money!).

Reverse the effect by getting prepared.

Firstly, most offices and gyms will usually have water coolers or bottled water dispensers.

These will either offer filtered tap water – chilled and ready to drink – or spring water from bottles.

Use these to grab a drink from every now and then; afterwards, fill up a sports cap water bottle and carry it with you as you go about your business.

You can use a standard recycled plastic water bottle or invest in a proper sports cap water bottle – the type that usually features a flip lid.

Sports cap bottles are designed to withstand many knocks and bumps, so they usually last a while – a worthwhile investment you might say!

You can also carry hot drinks with you whilst you are on the go by filling up a Thermos flask.

You’ll find these in a range of sizes and they are ideal for keeping you warm and hydrated whilst travelling, rather than feeling tempted to nip into a commercial coffee shop.

Try making your own coffee or tea, or be healthy and fill up your bottle with hot water and a squeeze of lemon, or some fruit or herbal teas.

Green, oolong, mint, nettle and chamomile teas are all great choices with a wide range of health benefits.

Saunas and Health

If you are looking at fresh ways to improve your health this spring and have already been topping up at the office bottled water cooler, exercising more and eating healthier foods, then saunas may be an interesting addition to your health regime.

Saunas use the power of hydrotherapy that is water combined with heat to help the body to detox naturally.

They have been in use across the world for hundreds of years, and each culture has a slightly different way of approaching saunas for a traditional detoxification.

The most well-known type of sauna in the UK has to be the Swedish sauna, models of which are featured in a range of gyms, leisure centres, private spas, health clubs and hotels.

They can offer excellent health benefits. Some have claimed that they can result in increased immunity, deep cleansing and detoxification.

Swedish saunas also provide rest and relaxation.

Most people are advised not to overdo their time in the sauna when they first experience one. And it’s important to have the cold shower afterwards to benefit from the increase in circulation, cool down and close open pores in the skin.

It’s also essential to stay hydrated in the sauna. Therefore many users will fill up from bottled water coolers before they enter the sauna.

Rather than gulping down water, sip it at intervals before taking your sauna and take a bottle of water into the sauna if necessary.

Avoid drinking water that is too cold, as it can be too much of a contrast against the heat.

After your sauna, continue your hydrotherapy experience by showering or perhaps using a steam room, foot bath or other hydrotherapy service to benefit your body and mind.

Try drinking herbal teas for the rest of the day to add to the health benefits and avoid introducing toxins to your system!
