Frank Wrathall hopes for a strong end of season performance at BTCC 2011 finale

Frank Wrathall is preparing to regain his form as the British Touring Car Championship draws to a close this weekend at the renowned Silverstone Race Circuit, Northamptonshire.

Frank and the Dynojet Race Team hope for further podium success following the recent bad luck incurred at Brands Hatch on October 2nd. The NGTC Toyota Avensis suffered two non-finishes due to suspension problems during the qualifying rounds and was unable to gain points for the remainder of the weekend.

Frank who recently turned 25 had the following comments, “Everyone within the team is determined to make up for last time and put everything into getting it right and finishing the season on a high,” adds Wrathall.

“Fortunately the damage suffered at Brands Hatch was mostly cosmetic and easily fixed, and we have had a good, relaxed time in the workshop getting everything prepared. We will shake the Toyota down at Donington on Thursday and hopefully arrive at Silverstone with everything well prepared and in good shape.”

In his BTCC debut Frank who is sponsored by Angel Springs the UK’s longest established water cooler company has had four podium finishes from six races at Knockhill and Rockingham setting historic milestones along the way.

Looking forward to the season finale at Silverstone Frank said “The Toyota has the potential to go well there,” says Frank, “although I have been caught out before with my predictions – circuits where I have thought we might struggle we have gone well, and vice versa.”

Badminton People Chase runners ‘not horse’ thanks to Angel Springs water donation

Angel Springs, the UK’s leading provider of bottled and mains-fed water coolers, supported runners in the Badminton ‘People Chase’ charity event on October 2.

The Horseless Team Event was organised by the Rotary Club of South Cotswolds, and saw people run round the course where the Badminton Horse Trials are held every May in south Gloucestershire.

The Badminton Horse Trials is widely accepted as the toughest equestrian event in the world – and attracts the largest crowd for a single sporting event in Europe, with 150,000 people flocking to spectate every year.

However, for the Horseless Team Event on October 2, there wasn’t a horse in sight – instead, participants tackled the course on foot.

And Angel Springs helped support the runners’ efforts by providing twenty-four 18.9L bottles of spring water for the water stations on the route, as part of its Angels in the Community Scheme.

Up to 800 people took part on the day, helping to raise money for the Rotary Club’s three chosen charities.

John Murphy, commercial director at Angel Springs, explained: “The Horseless Team Event is a quirky, popular fundraiser, where runners get the chance to tackle the same course used for the Horse Trials in Badminton Park Estate every year.

“It’s a big challenge for everyone taking part, and this is the second year in a row that Angel Springs has helped support the event by providing refreshing bottles of spring water for the runners to drink.

“Our Angels in the Community Scheme was set up to support events exactly like this, and we were delighted to offer our support again this year.”

Dramas at Brands Hatch for Frank Wrathall

Frank Wrathall and the Dynojet Racing Team fell foul of some dubious driving tactics from rivals in the ninth round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at the Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent.

Frank’s ‘Next Generation Touring Car’ Toyota Avensis was punted out of the action in two of the three races, leaving the Lancashire driver frustrated and disappointed. Frank’s sole success came in round 26, in which he stormed from near the back of the grid to finish 13th.

His dramas began on Saturday with a practice session crash at Sheene Curve, one of the quickest sections of the track. A technical problem pitched Frank’s Avensis off the track, through a gravel trap and into a tyre wall, causing frontal damage. Though speedily fixed by the Dynojet crew, the time lost in making repairs put the team on the back foot for the rest of the weekend.

A further visit to a Brands Hatch gravel trap, this time at Clearways, piled on more problems in qualifying. Wrathall had the opportunity for only one flying lap of the 2.3-mile track, and wound up 14th on the 29-car grid for race one.

Wrathall’s first race outing ended on the penultimate lap after a clash with the BMW of veteran Rob Collard as they disputed 10th place. “With two laps to go I passed Collard but he then just steered into me,” said Frank who is sponsored by Angel Springs the UK’s leading supplier of both bottled and mains fed water coolers. “He kept doing so until he broke something in the Toyota’s rear suspension.” Wrathall was pitched into a spin, off the track and into the barriers. “It’s a real shame. I got a reasonable start and was picking my way through. The car wasn’t 100 per cent because we lost a lot of track time with problems yesterday, but I was able to look after the Avensis and it was getting stronger and the race was coming to us.”

He bounced back from adversity to secure a fine 13th place in the second race of the weekend, however. Frank’s Toyota Avensis set a blistering first-lap pace to make up seven places from 24th spot on the grid. Wrathall then snatched 15th from Rob Austin’s Audi on lap five through Surtees, and gained two more places when others fell by the wayside.

“We changed the car a lot before the race,” said Frank, “and it was a completely different machine, miles better. I made up a lot of places early on; the Toyota was really strong from the word go. I’m really happy to have brought it home where I did after the weekend we have had.”

Wrathall’s hopes of a points finish in the third and final race of the Brands Hatch BTCC weekend were dashed by another smash-and-grab raid from one of his rivals. He was battling with Vauxhall man Andy Jordan and Ford driver Michael Caine over 12th when Caine sideswiped the Toyota: “When we got to the apex of Paddock Hill Bend he clipped my rear left,” said Frank. “It weakened something in the suspension and I could feel that the car wasn’t right. Eventually it broke.” Frank spun off and out of 13th place on lap four.

“Not a great weekend on the whole, but we’ll put it behind us and go for it at Silverstone for the final rounds.”

Frank Wrathall is ready for Brands Hatch challenge

Frank Wrathall is preparing to continue his podium finish results this weekend as the ninth round of the BTCC 2011 continues.

The talented driver has taken the championship by storm with a string of outstanding performances resulting in four podium finishes during the rounds at Knockhill and Rockingham, securing maximum Independent points and setting a new BTCC lap record at Rockingham.

This weekend Frank and the Angel branded NGTC Toyota Avensis will face the challenge of the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in Kent, known for its challenging mix of sweeping bends. Frank who is sponsored by Angel Springs the UK’s fastest growing supplier of both, bottled and mains fed water coolers believes the circuit is ideal for his turbo charged Avensis commenting,

“I think a good chunk of it will suit us; the Toyota should come into its own on the fast parts of the Grand Prix loop; possibly the only weak spot might be up the hill from Surtees, where the extra weight we carry could be a disadvantage.

I went well at Brands Hatch last year in the Ginetta, and it’s one of my favorite circuits, so I am looking forward to the challenge.”

After just missing out on his first BTCC win in race two at Rockingham and achieving three third place finishes and a second, talk in the paddock has been about whether Frank will get the first NGTC win of the championship. Feeling the pressure the 24 year old from Preston said,

“To have come so close, if we now don’t get a win we will perhaps be disappointed… But in the bigger picture, getting on to the podium in our first BTCC season, finishing second and setting fastest laps is more than we ever imagined possible.

It’s a strange situation to be in. If you had asked us our realistic target at the beginning of the year, we would have said a top-10 finish by the end of the season. We are way beyond that already…”

Be sure to tune in this weekend and look out for Frank and his Angel branded car, live this Sunday on ITV4 and ITV4 HD from 11:30am to 6pm with highlights on later ITV1.
